The Orange Pop and Zest–Next Generation Bikes!

Remember your first bike? I don’t mean your first ‘proper’ bike, I mean the bike you actually learned to ride on. The chances are it was probably pretty crap. Your typical kids bike is heavy, cumbersome and badly made – not the ideal piece of kit for little ones trying to get into the sport. Over the past few years we have started to see some big changes in the kids’ bike market, with the likes of Isla and Frog producing well thought out, well made munchkin bikes. More recently, Orange have entered the fray with the Orange Zest – a 26 inch trail bike aimed at younger riders who aren’t quite ready for a full sized adult bike. Following the popularity of the original Zest, Orange have now released a whole family of kids bikes, covering everything from 16” to 26”, with a focus on quality and ease of use.

The growing popularity of balance bikes for toddlers has meant the the transition to pedal power is easier than ever. A well made 16 inch bike, like the Orange Pop pictured above, is a great introduction to biking and a real confidence booster. The Pop has everything you need for 3 to 6 year olds learning the ropes of biking. The simple single speed set up means no fussing over gear choice, and the the v-brakes give more than enough stopping power and are tough enough to deal with young riders!

Zest 20

Moving on to 20” wheels generally means tackling rougher, steeper and generally more challenging terrain. The Orange Zest 20” has been designed to deal with these new demands with a 9 speed drivetrain, hydraulic disc brakes and the option of a suspension fork. This is a cracking bike for little riders who are serious about getting into the sport. The Zest 20” costs £550 with the rigid fork, or £650 with the suspension fork, and is suitable for your typical 5-9 year old.

Zest 24

As kids’ biking confidence improves, it becomes more important that their bikes come equipped with better performing components. The Orange Zest 24”, suitable for riders aged 7 to 10, is kitted out more or less like an adult bike. The bike is built around a SRAM NX 1x11 drivetrain, so has a wide enough gear range to allow for longer rides on more varied terrain – not something you get on your typical kids bike! To match this, the bike also has loads of stopping power with the Tektro hydraulic disc brakes and a kids specific tuned, air sprung suspension fork.

Getting kids riding decent bikes from a young age is a great way to let them build their confidence on the trails, and is vital for kids who are keen to take their riding to the next level. The Orange Pop and Zest series of bikes have been built with the quality, reliability and attention to detail you’d expect from an Orange bike – with features like sealed bearings meaning they should last a very long time. If you’d like any more details about these bikes then please drop in and see us at our Ambleside store. We can’t wait to get the next generation of Lake District riders out riding them!
