With winter well and truly setting in, it’s time to put your treasured summer road bike into hibernation for the next few months and switch to a steed that’s better suited to wet and gritted roads.

There’s no need to resort to rattling around on that old relic that’s been rusting away in the shed, and is only suitable for winter riding by virtue of the fact that you couldn’t possibly do it any more damage. What you really need is a bike that’s designed to make light work of winter conditions, is fun to ride, and won’t pack up on you half way through your commute home on a cold, dark night.

Roll forward the all new 2018 Specialized Diverge E5. Built from premium E5 aluminium, with a FACT carbon fork, it’s light, stiff and durable, with a comfort-orientated geometry that makes it a pleasure to ride on even the longest rides. With clearance to comfortably fit up to 700x42mm tyres, there’s plenty of room to accommodate some fat, grippy winter tyres as well as mud guards. Disc brakes also offer supreme stopping power, even in the wet, where rim brakes fall short.

Not only is it perfectly suited to tackling winter roads, but it’s also designed to ride just as well off road, so you can hit the trails for some gravel riding at the weekend.

It’s certainly a lot of bike for the modest £799 price tag, and if your budget can stretch a bit further there are several other higher spec models in the range, including the Diverge Comp E5, which comes with Specialized’s ingenious ‘Future Shock’ headset for added shock absorption on rough terrain, and the Diverge Comp, which adds a carbon frame and hydraulic disc brakes to the mix.

Although the Diverge is designed to be unisex, there are also two female specific models, including the Women’s Diverge E5, which shares the same spec and low price tag as the unisex version.
