Hunt Wheels Arrive–Get Ready For The Chase

Last year when I bought my beloved gravel bike Niall I spent ages looking for some wheels that suited my needs.  They needed to look good, not making a noise (Hope hubs drive me insane!), have the ability to fit an XD driver, be tubeless ready, be proper disc i.e without the stupid braking surface left on the rim, and be something different from the norm.  This is when I stumbled across Hunt wheels.

Established by 2 brothers Pete and Tom Marchment between them they have years of experience working in this crazy industry with some fairly well known wheel brands.  Spotting a gap in the market when they too couldn’t find wheels to suit their needs they set up Hunt to fill in the gaps and that has developed into a wheel range spanning over 8 models.  Tom is one of the nicest most genuine guys I’ve ever had the pleasure to chat to, and you can tell this is his passion, it’s very much a case of sitting down with a brew with no pressing matters before you have a chat with Tom!

All the parts for Hunt wheels are sourced from world class suppliers in Taiwan and they are hand built here in the UK.  This is Mr. Hao-Cheng who has built and finely tensioned tens of thousands of wheels for leading high-end brands during his many years as a master wheel builder.  All Hunt wheels go through a two person build and finishing process with every wheelset undergoing a full quality control inspection where all features of the build are checked.  The wheels are then signed off personally by the builder on an individual control card which is supplied in the box. They show huge pride and passion in their work.

Unlike many brands all the wheels from Hunt are tubelesss from the off.  No conversions needed, just ready to go when you need them.  This is rare in the road world where they’ve been a bit slow to catch up with mtb and CX riders but as the tyre options expand we’ve seen an increasing demand for road tubeless wheels and Hunt step up to the mark.

The rims are manufactured from a Superlight Niobium aluminium alloy which uses an advanced T10 heat-treatment process to deliver outstanding weight, stiffness and durability meaning rims can be wider for 25 and 28mm tyres, deeper for better aero performance and yet remain super-light for excellent climbing and acceleration.

Along with high quality rims, Hunt use precision double contact sealed bearings by EZO Japan and Pillar’s high-spec spokes.  Pillar spokes are cold-drawn from Swedish Sandvik Stainless Steel T302 wire and feature Pillar’s patented PSR spoke head re-enforcement. PSR spokes are butted again just before the spoke head providing more material in this high stress area. These spokes cost more but the triple butting provides a great ride and the PSR adds extra durability over standard spokes.

The attention to detail and quality doesn’t stop when it comes to the necessary parts to make your wheels fit either.  Their skewers are some of the nicest I’ve seen and they produce a wide range of parts to enure your Hunt wheels will fit any of your road based bikes.  Hubs axles can be altered, centrelock can move to 6 bot and you can have 60mm carbon rims with tubeless valves.  Basically all bases are covered!

Just like Hope, Hunt test all their products in the UK as we have a very special climate here and special mud Mr Mavic once told me.  Their products are continually developed as they get feedback from their customers which ensures you are investing in something that is proven and ridden to destruction before it reaches the market place.

Along with Hunt we took on Mason a month or so ago who are another UK based brand who choose to spec all their bikes with Hunt wheels.  This partnership ensures that the bike and the wheels that are on it are designed for your riding on the rough Lake District roads.  Along with our Mason bikes we have fitted Hunt wheels on our new Open UP frames so if you’d like to see what the fuss is about then come and have a look.
