  • The Wisper eMTB range was launched in September 2017 at the UK Cycle Show at the NEC. Over 300 people test rode the bikes, the vast majority proclaiming them the best eMTB they had ever ridden.

Available in Early 2018, our new range of four high end eMTBs will all feature the superb Shimano Steps E8000 mountain bike drive system. Specifically designed by Shimano for high performance eMTB use, the E8000 is part of the Deore XT group set, recognised as the very best in eMTB power delivery.

The range consists of the Wisper Wolf hard tail MTB in a choice Alloy or Carbon, and the Wisper Wildcat full suspension in either Alloy or carbon. Each bike will feature differing levels of equipment depending on the frame material chosen.

All four bikes have been carefully and painstakingly designed in house and equipped to offer supreme handling in the most difficult of conditions. Full details will be available in the next couple of weeks.

We have chosen the Shimano Steps MTB E8000 drive system because, unlike others, it has been designed specifically for mountain biking. Offering a superb, natural riding experience, taking tight corners and getting our bikes up and over obstacles is a breeze. The system gives you more support for powerful climbing and is lightweight for easy and accurate handling. It levels the field for riders of all skill levels and gives greater support for higher cadences whilst retaining a completely natural feel. Of all the systems on the market we unanimously agree that the Shimano E8000 is the best available. The only system good enough for the Wisper eMountain range.

Prices are between £3,199 and £5,799 depending on the model and equipment levels.

The new Shimano unit is more powerful, compact and weighs less than other models in the market. It offers more clearance for those daring descents and due to the Shimano designers’ long term experience in MTB design, the Q factor (distance between cranks) and rear stay length are exactly the same as on a non electric mountain bike, offering nimble cornering and maximum efficiency.

The new “beefed up” 75Nm (250W) motor makes even the steepest of climbs a breeze. This is coupled with a new lightweight and rigid hollowtech crankset, designed specifically for eMTBs.

Our eMTB range is designed to provide a rewarding riding experience on long trails or short, fast, down hill blasts. The full suspension bikes utilise the new Trunnion mount, offering better durability and less friction. The Trunnion setup offers increased standover height, enabling suspension unit designers to produce a frame offering a smoother, stronger pedal stroke. We have employed a Horst link on the rear swing arm, the Horst link makes the rear suspension less susceptible to the forces of pedalling and braking, giving the rider a more comfortable ride with enhanced handling and performance.

Our flagship bikes are constructed using high tensile T700 UD carbon, the same material used in the build of fighter aircraft and rotor blades. The 6061 tempered aluminium frame has mechanically formed top and down tubes with interior cable routing. Both carbon and alloy frames benefit from tapered head tubes enabling us to build in a stronger and stiffer front end. Both frames have been designed to clear the larger 27.5” plus tyres or 29er wheels for even more versatility.

Since last year sales of ebikes at Ings have rocketed and one of the brands doing particularly well is Wisper, the UK based brand who have been designing and selling ebikes for over 10 years.  Using proven electrical systems mated to simple, robust and reliable frames, Shimano gears and Tektro brakes Wisper compete with manufacturers such as Freego and G-Tech on price but blow them out of the water when it comes to spec and quality.

    STEPS controller

A while back we were talking to the company owner about their forthcoming range of electric mountain bikes and our initial assumption was that they were going to work on improving upon the wide range of entry level electric mountain bikes starting to appear and offering better value for money…

Well, it turned out we were half right, they’re certainly offering great bikes with great value for money, but it’s not the entry level manufacturers who should be worried, it’s the big players in the industry!  Once we were shown the specs and designs for the new bikes it was obvious that Wisper have concentrated on providing truly well specced bikes that will compete with options from some of the major manufacturers.

    STEPS display.jpg

They’re starting with a hardtail called the Wolf and a Horst Link full susser called the Wildcat, both available in either alloy or carbon.  All in Boost, all with Shimano STEPS, all with XT based drivetrains, all with 27.5+ or 29er compatibility, all with dropper posts, a choice of battery sizes etc etc etc!  So all this sounded pretty exciting but we didn’t want to commit until we could see them in the flesh.

    Wisper Spec.jpg

Fast forward 6 months and Wisper landed at Ings with a van full of electric mtbs for us to play with.  So we did. And then we ordered a load of the carbon versions!  The Shimano STEPS system means the back end is short like a non-electric mountain bike so it’s playful yet stable which is something other motor systems cannot achieve in their ride quality.  If there’s one thing ebikes do well it’s provide stability but providing a feeling of playfulness is more difficult when the bikes weigh the wrong side of 20KG.  Even from the short time we had with the bikes though it was obvious that Wisper had got their design bang on.

We have got 6 bikes across the models and sizes on order and they are due to land in January.  We will promptly get them built and they will all be available for you to try before you buy i.e. you can take them out on a off road demo ride from the shop so you can not only take our word for how good they are, but you can see for yourself!

In the meantime if you have any questions about the Wisper range or other E MTB bikes that we stock just give John at our Ings store a ring as he’s the man when it comes to this!
