Santa Cruz+Orange Demo Day

Thanks to everyone that attended Saturday’s fantastic Demo Day, here at Biketreks in Ambleside, with two of the most desirable mountain bike brands in the world.

Riders enjoyed an interesting and varied route, with a little of everything to test their bike of choice.

The ever popular Orange Five Pro went down a storm, confidence inspiring, durable and customizable, it is a revelation for all that rode it.

Santa Cruz gave the opportunity to ride the extremely well received Tallboy and Tallboy LT, currently considered to be the benchmark in off road 29ers.

With copious amounts of tea drunk, it has been a great day in Lakeland sunshine.

Good Luck

To all One thousand and seven hundred riders in today’s Fred Whitton Challenge ride. With a forecast of rain later in the afternoon, it has been an early start for the wise.

Departing Coniston from about 5am onwards, it is an often gruelling route that takes in almost all the major lakeland passes, and cover 112miles in the process.

One of the main challenges is how to eat enough whilst riding your bike, a typical rider in this event will consume circa seven thousand calories, that is quite a stack of food!

You can check your friends times here http://www.fredwhittonchallenge.org.uk/results.php

Don’t forget the Giro D’Italia is also on now, and can be followed here http://www.steephill.tv/giro-d-italia/

Goss Wins on Scott

Giro scott_0109563_1_full_600

Matt Goss takes the win on Stage 3 of the Giro D’Italia, in a sprint finish marred by

a crash that took down a late charging Mark Cavendish and also the Maglia Rosa of Taylor Phinney.

The crash was caused by the very abrupt swerve of Roberto Ferrari, that violently knocked Cav’s front wheel

from under him. The ensuing carnage took down many riders, with Cavendish escaping with bruising thanks to the

quick reactions, and great bike handling of other Pro’s. One swerved around his head, the other bunny hopped his

body, all this at approx 75KPH and with a split second’s notice. The Maglia Rosa crossed the line in an anbulance, while

Cavendish did manage to carry his bike over the line. Tuesday is transfer and rest day, which some riders clearly need.

As a footnote Specialized and Scott have won almost every Spring Classic and several major stage wins so far this season.

Matt Goss rides for Orica Greenedge, who ride the fabulous Scott Foil.

Wiggins Wins

2012 has been a good year so far for Bradley Wiggins (Team Sky)

Bradley Wiggins became the first Britain in 65 years to win the Swiss race, the Tour of Romandie, at the weekend. Team Sky took what many observers think may be their line up for the Tour in July, a very strong team.

Wiggin’s win was not without surprises and mishaps. The biggest surprise was him winning a Sprint! This from a rider renown for his metronomic time trial style, he went early, with about 300M to go and simply rode away from everybody, admittedly there where no big hitting sprinters present, but even so, it was not expected. The mishap came in the final stage, a relatively short time trial of 16.5km, which Wiggins started trailing Sanchez by a few seconds.  Wiggins unshipped his chain whilst shifting, and had to manhandle the chain back on to continue. Many have said, the ‘old’ Wiggins would have climbed off and thrown the bike and the dummy into the side of the road. It is a credit to how he has improved both physically and mentally since his accident in last years Tour. Wiggins himself said, the adrenaline kicked in after the mishap and fuelled his energy.

Get Ready For The Fred!

It’s less than 1 month to go until the Fred Whitton sportive and now is the time for the final preparation. With 112 gruelling miles ahead, not to mention climbs and descents of up to 30% steepness, there are some key pieces of kit and knowledge you need to get you round the course.

1/ Brake Blocks – Whether you know the hills or not, you will be clinging to your brake levers for several descents, so make sure your brakes are in excellent working condition. If in doubt, stick some new ones on. At the same time, clean your braking surface on the rims, and check the brake cable is in full working condition too.

Recommended Product – Shimano Inserts - £9.99 – To stop when you want to, look no further than these.

image

2/ Tyres – Nobody wants punctures at any time, but definitely not when you are hurtling down a descent. New tyres provide you with more grip, increased puncture resistance and a smoother ride. You are placing a lot of trust in those pieces of rubber, so do yourself a favour and check them for wear and make sure they are in tip top condition.

Recommended Product – Michelin Pro Race 3 - £37.99 – Fast, light and one of the best road tyres you’'ll ever find.

image

3/ Energy Food And Drink – 112 miles is a long, long way. Keep yourself topped up with bars, gels and drinks. If you begin to feel hungry then it is already too late – eating before you need to is the key to staying strong all the way through.

Recommended Product – Clif Bars, Shot Blocks, Gels – From £1.30 – Great tasting and guaranteed to keep you going.

image image image

4/ Overshoes – If you are planning on getting an early start then be prepared for a chill in the air. A light pair of over shoes or toe covers can make the day a far more enjoyable experience. 8 hours in the saddle with cold toes isn’t anyone’s idea of fun, so get some on keep your feet happy.

Recommended Product – Pearl Izumi Toe Covers - £14.99 – Light, warm and you won’t know you’re wearing them.

image

5/ Clothing – It could be 20 degrees and sunny, or 5 degrees with thunder, lightning, hail and snow. The right clothing can make the difference. Carrying arm, leg and/or knee warmers is essential, and a good packaway jacket is also a must. Don’t forget to wear a comfortable base layer and some good shorts too.

Recommended Product – Gore Power Bibshorts - £79.99 – Ride in comfort with the most popular shorts in the shop.

Boonen Does The Double!

Despite being the overwhelming favourite and marked man of the race, Tom Boonen (Omega Pharma – Quickstep) pulled off an epic victory in this years edition of Paris – Roubaix.  imageTom Boonen (Omega Pharma – Quickstep) takes a record equalling fourth win in the Roubaix velodrome

With over 50km still to run over the brutal cobbled roads Boonen attacked alone, soloing to his forth, record equalling, victory in the Hell of the North and completing a clean sweep of the cobbled classics this year.

Riding for the first time on Specialized’s new Roubaix bike Boonen powered away from his rivals, allowing the bike’s dampening system to iron out the pitted cobblestones of northern France.  Such a unique race demands specialist equipment, experience, determination and passion. With this win Boonen has cemented his place as the best classics rider of his generation.

image

The legendary Foret d’Arenberg, 3 km of treacherous cobbles.

With 90km still to run the Forest of Arenberg put paid to the early breakaway with 3 of the 8 riders crashing out and their lead on the peloton being cut significantly. Despite various attempts being made in the kilometres to follow, it wasn’t until Boonen and his team mate Niki Terpstra put the hammer down with 53km to run that any significant gap opened up. From there on Boonen dropped his team mate and powered on, attacking every cobbled section with his usual agressive riding style. No concerted chase could close the gap and with a 1:30 cushion in the last 3 km Boonen was able to celebrate and savour his win before entering the outdoor velodrome at Roubaix.

2012 Is The UK Year of Cycling

That’s right, there has never been a better time to be a cyclist, or to become one. With 3 current British cycling world champions and the Olympics in London, cycling is the focus, and rightly so. It is a terrific sport that can be enjoyed by anyone of any age. No matter how young or old, fit or fat, the unbridled joy of riding a bike can be shared by anyone. There are few sports that make the soul sing as much as cycling.

family-cycling

So how to do it? “I went to a bike shop but they used words I didn’t understand, technical descriptions and lots of equipment was mentioned.” Do not be afraid. All you need to cycle is a bike and a couple of pieces to make the experience a real pleasure. At Biketreks we can cater for any level of cyclist. If you are beginning and want good, honest advice then get in touch. We want to get you cycling, not fleece you for equipment you don’t need. We want you to enjoy the experience and delight in cycling the way we do.

We also believe regular cycling is good for your health. The nation is getting fat, lazy and ill. Just a couple of hours a week on the bike can make the difference to your way of life, making you feel better and live longer. It is scientifically proven that exercise makes you happy – it isn’t a con, it really works!

A-female-cyclist--007

Spring Is Here Early!

Really cannot explain this but i have a ''spring'' in my step! Yes the middle of January and yet personally feeling very positive about the oncoming springtime and the warmer, lighter days ahead.  Ok so it will not be 'cracking flags' as in the rising of the mercury levels but spring certainly 'perks' us all up after the long, wet, cold winter months.

For those of you in the 'know' and those that have any insight into the working of 'Retail' and the selection and buying 'process' of seasonal products may realise that our collective ''body clock'' is quite frankly all over the 'show'!  As in ordering Spring/Summer in the moody, autumn reflective days, with Autumn...lets be all US of A here... Fall/Winter in the warm spring lengthing days. Confused? You bet your bottom dollar! But we do. Increasing so...

So it is good to be able to 'step back' and take a few moments to reflect on what first rate brands we have ordered fantastic products from. Here in The Boutique at Biketreks we have again gone for quality, provenance, tried & tested and indeed the very best we can to ensure we present to you the best there is.  So brands we trust, products we use and believe in, fabrics we know works, value for your 'dollar' and know-how in terms of fit, design, performance, function and not forgetting looks!

......to be continued....  from my Blackberry at home!....

Some wise crack once said that “the spirit of Christmas fulfils the greatest hunger of mankind” . . . . well if it hasn’t, then we’re sure the Biketreks end of year SALE will do!

We’ve put a great selection of both clothing and footwear into the Sale, have a look through, there’s something for everyone. If you’re keen to get out more as the days lengthen and the weather improves then what better time to upgrade your favourite trail bike with some new kit.

Or why not make this the year to challenge yourself and take up a different type of riding altogether. We’ve seen more people than ever taking up road riding and now could be your perfect chance to get a bargain on a new road bike. Whether you're just starting out or you think it’s time to replace your current bike with something faster and lighter then now is your opportunity. Have a look, you’d be foolish not to with bargain bikes like these!

There is so much more in the Biketreks end of year Sale and still more bits to be added and prices to be cut from day to day so keep an eye out for the updates . . .

It’s always darkest before the dawn…

That’s what they say. And as it is dark before 4PM now I’m eagerly awaiting the dawn. Unfortunately it’s likely to be many months before it’s here. So time to drag out the turbo trainer to make sure I hit Spring running.

Turbo Trainers”, I hear you cry?! “Aren’t those roady instruments of torture?” Well, in the wrong hands yes, but for most of us it is an ideal way to get and stay fit over the dark winter months. Now that darkness has fallen I might get out one or two days at the weekend and maybe a night ride during the week, but that leaves plenty of evenings for a quick spin on the turbo.

You don’t have to go crazy either. A 30 minute spin with some good music going keeps your legs and lungs ticking over, and clears your mind too. If you fancy pushing a bit further you can always try an interval session too (not as scary as it sounds!). After a short warm up try 5 minutes at a fast pace with 3 minutes recovery and repeat 2 or 3 times. This is plenty for most of us to get a decent work out without eating into relaxing evening time.

BiketreksTurboTraining

Will my bike fit?” Yes. Virtually any adult bike can be put on a turbo trainer. Road and hybrid bikes can go straight on whilst mountain bikes may require a new tyre to operate properly. For heavy use it is a good idea to get a specific training tyre but for light use there is no other essential equipment you need to use a turbo trainer.

“But don’t trainers cost a lot of money?” Not necessarily. We have trainers for every level of cyclist, ranging in price from £159.99 to £899.99. Just think if you do one session per week for 12 weeks of winter, that’s less than £15 per session, not much different from going to the dreaded gym, and you’ll have this piece of kit for the next several years too. Besides which, it takes hardly anytime to do a quick ride before dinner, get showered and ready to enjoy Corrie at 8 O’Clock!

So what I’m really trying to say is don’t leave it too late before you start getting ready for next year! New Year Resolution’s are great but if you do a bit of exercise beforehand you’ll be in far greater shape ready for the good weather. If you want to know more, pop in to the store and have a look at our turbo trainers and the other ways to make the most of the winter gloom, inside or out.

Au Revoir for now

Winter Tyres Are Here!

So the first few flakes of snow have fallen and you’ve probably rang the garage about winter tyres on the car, but have you thought about winter tyres on the bike?!

Both Andy and Mike have just fitted theirs to their cross bike and mountain bike respectively and are looking for more of the cold stuff to give them an outing.

For those of you who don’t know what I’m on about, we have just got the Schwalbe Ice Spiker tyres in.  These feature 304 tungsten tipped spikes that help you grip on the snow and ice.  The sets we have are wired with added puncture protection so you can be puncture free this winter once you’ve got them on.

If you don’t want to go to the extent of having spikes in your tyres but you want some added confidence in riding in wet conditions then here are some tips…

For the road… we would recommend using a tyre with a thicker sidewall with added puncture resistance such as the Specialized All Condition Armadillo Elite which like the name suggests features a band of kevlar protection to keep the thorns, nails, glass etc out of your tyres.  Yes they are slightly heavier than your normal “race” tyres but they mean you won’t have to fix punctures in the cold, wet, dark, snow…!  A worthwhile investment that William made for his commute to work fro Kendal and he hasn’t been late since putting them on!!

For the Cross Bike… we would recommend the Specialized Borough CX Armadillo Elite’s which again feature added puncture protection and go on relatively easily and allow on and off road riding with ease.

For the mountain bike … we would recommend Maxxis Minion DHF up front and a Maxxis High Roller on the rear for you all mountain riders, and Maxxis Advantages front and rear for you more XC riders.  Another great consideration is turning your wheels to tubeless or UST as it’s termed.  This allows you to run lower air pressures in your tyres for added grip and with a thicker sidewall punctures become a thing of the past.  Almost all wheelsets can be converted to UST using a special kit with silicon based fluid in which acts to seal the  tyre to the rim and block up any holes that might appear.  You can do this yourself or we can do it for you!

So there you have it, just a few ways to stay on the bike this winter so we want no excuses now!

Sarah

If it does then it is time to give it a damn good clean!  “Mr Smith” as we will call the owner of this very sad bike, was more than surprised to discover that it would be cheaper to buy a new bike rather than fix this one!  He has used it twice a day, every day for 6 months and never cleaned it.  He wondered why it started to squeak and squeal, it stopped changing gears, the brakes didn’t work anymore and there was no movement in his forks.  This is without a doubt the worst case of bike neglect (or cruelty as I like to call it!) we have seen in a while.

So with Mr Smith’s plight in mind we are offering you lovely people a great deal on cleaning this winter.  If you buy a Finish Line Brush set at £14.99, we will give you a Finish Line Bike Cleaner for only £1.  So that’s £15.99 to keep your noble stead in tip top condition throughout the winter months (click here for the link)

So please don’t be like Mr Smith, if you rely on your bicycle to get to work and back, or look forward to that one day a week you get away from the Mrs’ and the kids, then look after your kit!  Here’s a few more pictures and if any of you can identify with these then you better make the investment or we will be seeing you in our workshop! New Kit Through The Door!

Exciting times here at Biketreks. The last 2 weeks have seen all sorts of brand new gear come through the door.

New Clif Gel Shots promise to be a winner, especially the Double Espresso flavour with enough caffeine to keep you up all night!

 imageimage image image image

Shimano Winter Boots are back with an updated design but the same excellent performance of old. If you want dry, warm, comfy feet while riding this winter look no further. Why not couple them with the new Shimano M530 pedal? The bigger platform offers more support and better pedalling, all for under £40.

There’s plenty of tyres to talk about too. Just in time for the Cyclocross season Specialized have released the Terra tyre. A good grippy, mud-shedding tread with a nice supple rubber. And the classic Ground Control is back for the mountain biker’s too – a perfect mix of fast rolling and superb grip.

image image image

Barely an hour ago we received the first delivery of Maxxis High Roller 2’s. “How can you improve a classic?” I hear you say. With slightly wider knob spacing and better transition to the outer knobs the High Roller 2 promises to be the ultimate ground hugging tyre for the Lakes.

For the commuters we have new Niterider lights. The MiNewt range is light, compact, and pumps out enough light for the pitch black of night. They even charge via USB from your work PC! Combined with the Cateye Rapid 1 rear light you have a perfect commuting set up.

Pearl Izumi gloves of all shapes and sizes are here too, ready for the oncoming cold and wet weather. The Elite Softshell look particularly good with plenty of insulation to keep out the cold.

image image image image

Okay, take a breath, and let’s start on the clothing.

Primarily for commuting but great for anyone who wants to be seen, the Gore Path is full neon yellow with reflective piping too. Made of Gore’s Paclite material you can rest assured you will be dry, comfy and seen from miles away!

Craft baselayers are back with 2 options – warm and warmer! They are honestly the best way to stay dry and warm during winter riding. And we have a colour that isn’t black too!

Speaking of Craft we have new bib tights which are impressing everyone who looks at them so far. Great fitting with an excellent chamois pad, highly weather proof material keeps the wind and drizzle out, and reflective logo’s make passing driver’s take note! Definitely worth a go.

image image image image

More Craft in the form of lightweight gilets and thermal jerseys. Ladies Altura jerseys are also in stock – the perfect Autumnal top and great in conjunction with Pearl Izumi gilet.

The Pearl Izumi PRO softshells are looking fantastic too. Arm gaiters and thumb loops to keep the chill out, excellent water repellant and windproof material with legendary Pearl fit and quality.

And then there’s the bikes!

image image image

Scott F01L 40’s in store now in many sizes. They look excellent in white with Shimano 105 groupsets and there is already a lot of interest in those and the F01L 20’s too.

New Specialized Allez’s are here too. Perfect for those looking for their first road bike, or even something to ride through the winter.

We’ve even had 29ers in! Specialized Camber’s and Carve’s look excellent. We’ll soon be receiving demo bikes for you to try out. The future lies in big wheels…well, it might do anyway, definitely worth a try as they ride incredibly well!

Anything else? Maybe, Mr TNT is at the door so you never know….

3 Peaks CycloCross: skinny wheels . . . . bloody big hills . . . . sore shoulders . . . . . LOADS OF FUN!

Now in it’s 49th year The 3 Peaks CycloCross Race is an age old tradition. Staged in the Yorkshire Dales it takes place every year at the end of September and always draws a huge crowd. For those on the outside the race is complete madness yet every year hundreds of mad men (and women!) return to a challenge like no other. Andy, the boss, road it for the first time last year and even with a very good first timers performance he returned to the shop with sore arms and constant rants about the stupidity of it all. Two days later however everything had changed, the legs had recovered, the arms were no longer aching and just the mention of it had him revved up and telling anyone that’d listen how mad it was but more importantly how much better he could have done with a bit of time and prep. While he may not have admitted it at the time, this was a clear indication how much he’d enjoyed the the race, the challenge and more importantly that’d he’d definitely be back again next year.

The mass start heading out of Helwith Bridge.

So he has his reason for being at the start on Sunday, what’s mine? Simply because it’s my kind of event! Not just because it involves cycling and likewise with its fell running side but because it requires that bit more to complete it. Yes you have to be a bit mad to enter because it’s clearly a suffer fest. But having run the Lakeland 50 mile Ultra Marathon it was exactly what I needed next, a new adventure that’ll challenge even the fittest and ask big questions of how much someone is willing to give to succeed. While many will be happy to complete the circuit, some will be there to race (while in face Andy will deny this, we all know how competitive he is at heart) and I’ll admit to being one of those too. While being so competitive doesn’t come easily to some, for others it’s where we both excel and enjoy being. I’ve been waiting ages for this weekend to come along, I wont deny how excited I get leading up to such an event. The race is completely new ground to me but it’s the mixture of adventure and the unknown that are keeping me ticking over this week. I love riding my bike, I love a challenge, pushing myself beyond what many of my close friends consider sensible is what gets me fired up. While many would say it’s not a proper race, until you’ve done it, what will you know? It’s that sort of event where nothing you can do or be told can quite prepare you for what is yet to come, there is no let up until you cross the finish line back at Helwith Bridge. As ever I’ll still be sorting my kit out the night before the race, I’ll sleep terribly on Saturday and I’ll struggle to get breakfast down on Sunday morning. All of which are traits of any race prep for me, but I’m comfortable with that, it’s what I know. Come the start at 9:30 on Sunday my head will be in the right place, the legs will be attached and from then on everything is simple; head down, work hard and suffer all the way to the end!

Simon Fell, on route to the first summit.

The race is a casual 38 miles. Half of which however is on unsurfaced ground and a good 5 miles of which is unrideable even more so depending on how skilled and confident you are on the bike (and how big your balls are more to the point). Where you can’t ride, you have to shoulder the bike and go at it on foot. Some run but most walk at their best. At this stage it’s worth pointing out that the reason you’re off the bike is because you’re on your way to the summit of either of the 3 main peaks that the race tours. Ingleborough, Whernside and Pen-Y-Ghent are without doubt, bloody massive hills. As you can see from the pictures they’re steep, long climbs and the last place you’d want to be carrying a bike. Reaching the summit will come with great relief, only then to have to ride down the other side on lose, rough and rutted descents which are far from suited to riding on a cross bike. Imagine riding down a longer and steeper Loughrigg Terrace, on 32c tyres, no suspension, crap brakes and while almost every muscle is aching and screaming at you to stop and you’ll be halfway there to knowing quite what it’s like. In fact, never has 38 miles been so un-casual!

Final section of the decent off Whernside

While we’ve had ages to prepare for the event, we’ve both had the worst few weeks possible. While Andy has been on his bike riding across the continent for most of the summer (lucky git), tendinitis in his ankle has been a huge problem. That and the fact that Andy can barely run as far as the Apple Pie on a good day left him hobbling around the shop like an old man after his ‘training’ ascent of Wansfell last week. While I may have been laughing, I was no better off. After a brilliant summer of fell and marathon running I left it too late getting back onto the bike. When I did it wasn’t long before I came off it and ended up in the X-ray department at Kendal hospital. I don’t need to tell anyone that smashing a knee up just 2 weeks before such a big event is terrible practise (this time last week I wasn’t intending to race at all) but after 2 weeks of very committed recovery efforts I’m in a good enough state to start the event. When you add to this that due to various ‘technical issues’ neither of us have us have had our bikes race ready until today, two days before the event, we haven’t done ourselves any favours. So much for proper preparation!

But in all honesty the extra pressure, uncertainty and challenge only excites me more, adding to the experience. It’s one of those events that require more than just cycling fitness. You’ll only ever do as well as you are willing to push yourself on the day and it’s a race where if you aren’t prepared to hurt, then you shouldn’t be there. Like I said, my kind of event! Oh and luck plays a huge part too. While Andy has a previous experience and the descending skills that any rider in the race could wish for I have youth and runners legs on my side, it should be a great match up. Two of the Biketreks race team, Nick Bertrand and Johnny Dodgin are also riding so keep an eye out for them. One of our best loved customers and Thursday night warrior Rich Wood is also riding so it’ll be a great outing and the new Biketreks team kit will be well represented.

The race is on a live update using the SPORT ident timing system so if you head to http://www.3peakscyclocross.org.uk/index.htm you can keep track of the team’s progress and hopefully we’ll see a number of you out and around the course. Shouts of support are always appreciated, a clanging cowbell would be even better! Best of luck to all those riding, see you at the start.

Still intrigued as to what it’s all about? Then check out this video, like i said, madness! : http://youtu.be/NQmVqxVJvao

Have a great weekend all, I certainly know I will. Cheers, Mike.

AutoSag, Danglers, and 29ers! What a Day…

This time the management have been playing in Whinlatter with the boys from Specialized and their new 29er bike range!  Yes that’s right, the beardy weirdy bikes have been tried and tested in pouring rain and biting midges on some typical Lakeland trails.  So what’s the verdict?

Spec Demo Day Van

Well all in all I’d own a Camber 29er any day of the week!  Lined up for us to try was the new Camber 29er, the new Epic 29er and the Revised Stumpjumper FSR 26er.  For 2012 Specialized have expanded their model range hugely with the introduction of 29ers in both full suspension and hardtail format, and for both men and women.  So just what is all the fuss about?

Spec Demo Day Bikes

First up and out on the trail was the Camber 29er which I was looking forward to trying.  About this time last year I got introduced to the standard 26” wheeled Camber Pro and I loved every second I spent with it.  A bike that is incredibly capable, sure footed and climbs with a spring in its step, so could this be transferred to a bigger wheeled version?  Yes is the answer!  Giving it a blast round the blue route at Whinlatter meant we encountered smooth singletrack, plenty of braking bumps, some rooty sections and plenty of those horrible things called hills!  The Camber rolled through, round and over all these obstacles with ease, it is without a doubt the smoothest bike I have ever ridden and doesn’t have any of the fanciness of a Brain or an RP23 with propedal or VPP suspension, it is simple, sleek and straight to the point.  It corners beautifully and the big wheels carry speed incredibly well and give the rider  great confidence in where they point it.  The 29er platform is balanced to perfection with no under or over steer which is what impressed me.  I was expecting it to be like trying to steer a boeing 747 down a Swiss mountain pass, but this was far from the reality.  The Camber climbed very well with none of that “rearing up at you” action on the steeper ascents, and when pointing downwards it swoops and swooshes along eating up all mere 26er riders in its wake.  An absolute pleasure to ride and with prices starting from around the £1500 mark this is certainly a bike that will feature in my “collection” soon!

Camber 29er

Following on from the Camber was the new Epic 29er which has grown so popular over in the US that the 26 inch version is no longer in production.  An XC racers dream, the Epic and me have never really got along, I feel like I’ve been beaten up after a day out on an Epic, so how would the 29er fair?  Well, fair play to Specialized they have developed an XC race bike on a trail friendly 29er platform.  Still a bit too “rattle your teeth out” for myself but the likes of Mike and Colin within the shop will adore this bike.  The models we rode were equipped with Specialized’s new Brain which has gone on a bit of a diet (saving 30 grams) and the internals have been completely redesigned.  The Brain of old worked on an inertia valve platform where the bike responded to both pedal feedback and trail feedback and balanced the two out for you, so as a rider you glided along completely oblivious to what the suspension below you was doing.  This worked great as any owner of a Specialized bike with one will tell you, but they will also tell you that on occasions when you are really pushing the bike it can feel like it bottoms out or clunks and gives you a harsh feedback through the back end.  After a bit of a tweak in Specialized HQ they have redesigned the Brain to work on a Shim stack (like in a Cane Creek Double Barrel Shock for those of you in the know!) which not only provides effortless floaty like feeling with no end to its capabilities, but there are also less settings to choose from, only 6 clicks as opposed to 12-18 like on the old Brain!  So does it really make a difference?  You bet ya!  Even a numpty like me could tell the difference between riding the old 29er Epic with the old Brain to the New 29er Epic with the new Brain.

So technology aside, the Epic 29er is a rapid bike.  It climbs with speed and finesse  and descends more confidently than you’d expect for a short travel bike.  The big wheels are a real bonus on this genre of bike as you just roll along effortlessly.  With some models boasting a full carbon frame, full XTR, Roval carbon wheels and a pair of carbon steerer RockShox SID forks also equipped with a brain, the Epic range isn’t cheap £2000 - £6500, but if you want a quick all day race bike that isn’t a full on 'hands down bum in the air’ affair then this one is you.

Epic 29er

So after a teeth rattling experience on the Epic, came the beloved stumpjumper FSR.  So what’s new for the old faithful stumpjumper?  Well it has the same Brain as the Epic 29er which is even more of a benefit in a long travel bike, a 142mm spaced rear end making it stiffer and more direct, all models are coming with a tapered headtube transferring the stiffness up front as well as to the back end, most models are coming with a Command Seatpost (a variable height seatpost) for ultimate versatility, and then 2 brand new features for Specialized.

The first is called the Dangler!  Now this little device is the work of a genius.  The Dangler is Specialized’s take on the chain device or Gamut roller type thing. The Dangler is built into the rubber chainstay protector on the swingarm and is a triangular piece of posh plastic that guides the chain between the rear mech and chainset.  This has eliminated all chain slap and the dropping of the chain between the 2 extremes of the front rings on a 2 x 10 system, but the great thing about it is that it just dangles there.  It isn’t fixed like a roller which means it bumps and bounces around with you meaning it never gives up.  The chain never gets trapped between the roller and the frame or in other awkward places, it just “dangles” there doing its job quietly.  It can be removed if you want, but it works so well I don’t see why you would want to ride without it.

The Dangelr 2

The next amazing invention from the boffins at Specialized is the “Autosag” feature.  Now having managed bike shops for the last 6 years, I know you boys are prone to fiddling with things whether you understand them or not, and your rear shock is one of those things!  A poorly set up shock can mean the difference between a great feeling full suspension bike, a horrible wallowing one, or one that feels more like a hardtail!!  So Specialized have taken all the thinking out of it for you on the Stumpjumper FSR range.  All you do now is pump the shock up to around 300psi with a shock pump, put the cap back on, find yourself a friend to hold the bike steady or a convenient tree, put all your kit and riding pack on, sit gently down onto the bike and then press the big red button!  And hey presto the bike autosags to the correct point for your weight!  Now I could go into how this is achieved but I don’t want to bore you all, but it really is that simply.  No more geek charts, sag keys, 30% guess work etc just press and go.  It is simple, reliable and needs no additional maintenance as it is all controlled by the piston inside so a normal air can service will see it right.

Autosag valve 2

With all these features the stumpy rode incredibly well, just like I have come to expect from the range.  A full frills fancy affair that tackles anything you throw at it with a calm, deliberating manner that doesn’t get you in trouble or hold you back.  It climbs well, it descends well and is worth £2000, £3000, £4000 or £6000 of anyone’s money.  As a 140mm trail bike it is hard to beat and although it doesn’t have the “niche” criteria for some of you tarts out there (me included!) it can do no wrong and goes from strength to strength each year.

So there you have it, 3 bikes tested and reviewed in the p**sing rain typical Lake District fashion.  If I had to choose one of them it would without a doubt be the Camber 29er and more than likely the Elite version which is coming in canary yellow!  All these bikes are available from early August and we have the privilege this year to be hosting demo days with the brand so if you want the opportunity to come and test them yourselves then look out for date announcements soon!

All that remains is to say a big thank you to Specialized for the opportunity to ride their lovely bikes and to Whinlatter for treating us to your tea and cake!

Thank you for reading

Sarah

Heads or Tails? A Ride on the new Scott F01L

4774689858_658f6c8f70_o I’m getting on, been around the block a few times, perhaps even a bit cynical some might say.  Have heard all the claims over the years: stiffer, lighter, faster, more comfortable, even that the bike rides its self.  Then along comes Scott’s Fo1l.
Biketreks being given the chance to hold a Demo day of these bikes was for me the chance to reignite my fire.  Who knows, possibly these things really do ride them self's?

Anyway ten big brown boxes arrived and I opened the first one. Started removing the packaging, slurping on Keith’s late afternoon burnt milk in a cup, and slowly started to see what lay beneath.  Granted it was a toy sized 52, but it had the genuine look of an old horizontal top tube with bang up to date features.  A genuine rise in passion was occuring.....

It all looked right ....internal cable routing into the headt ube. ...seat binder bolt slotted into the top tube instead of bolted on.  Granted it had SRAM Red on it, and Zipp 404 wheels, but beggars can’t be choosers.  However, at half the size of a proper 6 foot man’s bike…

Next I went for a 58cm to fit me, of which there were 2 to choose from.  One had Dura Ace and Mavic Cosmics on, the other with more SRAM loveliness.  Again I removed its packaging, torqued up the carbon bits and picked it up out of the stand.  This was also light, even lighter than I thought it would be.  Now don’t get me wrong, these things should be at the price (not confirmed yet but somewhere around £5K) but the wheels were clinchers and not the lightest at that, and the spec is usable not a "show special".  My blood was pumping at the thought of taking that bad boy out…

Ok now to be honest i have been doing a bit of road cycling with the shops pet whippet "Mike".  He is tall, lean and seems to be the real deal (this is Howard speaking mind, Keith works upstairs).  Obviously he can climb hills fast while my 91 kilo's seem to slow me down a touch on the hills, but he does lack a few, shall we say, manners and road etiquette.  But after 3 rides we are making progress in the house training department.  The gaffer said if the chance comes take the bikes out for a quick spin up the road as it’s good to ride and know what the bikes sold in the shop are like.  As you will see from the route bellow it was not quite a spin up the road, but it was in the spirit of a test ride.

Now there where two 58 cm FO1L’s, one with SRAM red and Zipp’s, the other Dura ace and Mavic Cosmics.  We both went to the SRAM bike, possibly for different reasons.  A fair decision had to be made.  I decided that because I was the older, more sensible, mature staff member (and I held him in a bike box till the point of submission) that he needed all the help he could get.  So I would ride the second tier, ‘not as well equipped bike’.  My reverse psychology worked a treat.  Claiming that I was old, fat and bald and needed the most help it should be me who had the SRAM equipped machine.  Anyway, after much immature ranting a coin was produced.  “HEADS OR TAILS?”.  Mike won (the jammy git) and I had the Dura Ace equipped rocket (its a hard life).

However, we rolled out of Ambleside stopping a few times to tweak saddle and bar position then took a left up Hollbeck lane, Mike waiting at most points up the climb.  We took the descent to the Ullswater valley steady (i.e. at reckless speed using every inch of the road, leaning the bikes sideways and praying the laws of physics would be held at bay)  Then up Aira force onto the 66.  Left at Threlkeld through St Johns in the Vale up to Thirlmere  and down the side past Dunmail Raise before the final blast back into Ambleside.

Now the bike itself; as mentioned these things are not cheap so they should be good, even brilliant.  Climbing wise it was a good stiff carbon bike, descending was stable with no surprises.  On rough sections the wheels make a bit of noise(heat shrink on the valve stems sorts this) and generally the cables need shortened.  But stick a bit of power down on the flat or rolling and this is where I feel she comes alive, the bike seems to maintain speed easier and roll very well.  My lasting impression was along the lake shore thinking that we were slowing down I looked at the Garmin and it said 17 mph rather than the ride usual 21/22mph.  Then I realised were heading uphill and cresting the rise.  It just seems to want to go.

Overall, what a feeling.  £5K between your legs and she just wants to go harder and faster, does it get any better?  A ride I won’t forget any time soon.

Howard

Scott FO1L

Because Feeling is Believing..

Biketrek’s will be one of the first to unveil the new Scott Foil. Come along on the 8th June to not just see one of the most technical bikes of the moment but have the chance to ride one. On this exciting day we will have 10 bikes to drool over and to demo.  There will be 3 rides from the shop throughout the day at 10am, 1pm, and 4pm.  To secure your seat on the saddle of one of these stunning bikes email: info@biketreks.net or phone 015394 31245 and book a place.

Not often do you have the chance to take out such high specked newly released bikes as these.

What’s it all about?

The Scott Foil is a new semi-aero bike which has been designed for an optimum balance between aerodynamics, stiffness and vertical compliance to give ultimate all round performance.

Shaping the future

The  key thing you will notice with the Foil is the shape of the frame.  Using carbon fibre, the shaping of the frame can be much more precise and intricate to create shapes that would be very difficult in metal.  Scott has moulded the frame to give minimal drag by shaping the front faces of the frame so that the bike slips through the air without causing drag.

What sets the Foil apart is that the rear edge that is usually elongated on an aero frame has been truncated. This has a number of effects.

image

Triangulated cross section gives a very high lateral stiffness providing optimum power transfer between what you put through your pedals and what comes out the back wheel to push you forward. The laterally stiffer the better!

Less prone to side winds to keep you speeding in the right direction.

By not having a fully aero shape Scott have manipulated the shape to give vertical compliance. This means that the frame can flex very slightly in the vertical direction, increasing the wheel contact with the ground over bumps, providing a very smooth ride. Furthermore, this also reduces the weight of the frame from a full aero frame making it only slightly heavier than the current Scott Addict with a medium frame weighing in at a mere 840g

Deep in the heart of Scott’s own factory in Sweden a patented, secret process takes place to create their carbon frames. This process allows Scott to wrap their carbon frames as one piece, one hollow unit, so that the joints are just as strong as the rest of the frame whilst being hollow and therefore lightweight.  Not only that, but the layup of the carbon is so precise that the inside of the frame is as good on the inside as it is on the outside. No blobs of misplaced resin, frayed fibres or plastic bags left in to support the frame, Scott carbon frames are perfect! Using Scott’s strongest carbon strands – HMX carbon fibre, the FO1L frame can be made thinner and therefore lighter, but remain super strong!

Performance

So how is all of this going to affect your ride?  Well basically the FO1L will allow you to cycle faster. The increased stiffness and reduced air resistance will give you a 20% reduction in drag compared to the Scott Addict enabling riders to cycle approximately  0.7kph faster.  That's a saving of 1.6 seconds per kilometre, or an extra 15 watts of power output (for those that know what that means).

Being virtual aerofoil rather than full aero, the bike is less affected by crosswinds opening the bike up to more applications, from generally fast riding, to time trial races, triathlons, sportives, basically anything road based… But not touring!

Effortlessly Fast.

The best way to describe the way this bike rides (according to those few that have ridden it) is very stable, smooth but most importantly effortless.

Your Perfect bike

The perfect balance between stiffness, weight aerodynamics and vertical compliance. What more do you want?

Aero Science SCOTT

The elements are always against you, the wind is trying to slow you, the climb is trying to break you, riders today need an advantage against these elements AND the competition.

The Perfect Bike takes into account three MAJOR variables; Stiffness, Weight and Aerodynamics.

A combination of the three makes for the most complete balance of attributes for transforming rider input into acceleration.

For less effort, the rider can maintain the same average speed, keeping them fresh for whatever effort is most important whether climbing, sprinting or cruzing.

For effortlessly smooth, fast and stable riding choose the best bike.

Specialized BG Fit Training…

Specialized BG Fit Centre – Specialized Body Geometry Fit Integration Technology (BG FIT) is a unique fit assessment process that enables us to help you find a position on the bike that allows you to ride faster, longer and in greater comfort. Mike and Colin recently spent time at the Specialized HQ in London training to become qualified as BG FIT Technicians. The system was developed by Specialized under the instruction of fit expert, Dr Andy Pruitt at the Boulder Centre for Sports Medicine in the States. The BG FIT experience is designed to help all forms of riders from the enthusiastic leisure rider to the likes of Cavendish and the HTC Columbia Team who recently underwent exactly the same BG FIT system. The fit is achieved by making adjustments to both the bike and your position on that bike. We are all very different in height, shape, flexibility and riding styles so every fit is a very individual experience. Having undergone the BG FIT process themselves Mike and Colin are already reaping the benefits that the in-depth assessment and calculated corrections made to the bike and the riding position thereafter. You could be next!

Road Ride in the Dales

Headwinds make you strong, so said a famously successful Belgian rider a few years ago. We battled into it for over 40 miles, maybe not the best day to tackle Tan Hill, the highest pub in the country!

Any which way, the ride home was a blast, big ring all the way, except for Buttertubs, a great little 25% climb from Swaledale into Wallace and Gromit country of Wenslydale.

Welcome to Buttertubs!

Spring Has Arrived it’s official…

Well, well, well, it’s approaching 5:30pm and it’s still light!  The Biketreks team are all getting ready for their commute back home to varying locations around the Lake District and the MD has been out on his road bike getting the miles in all day; it’s a hard life up North!  At the moment we’ve turned into a bunch of roadies with hardly a MTB to be seen.  We’ve got the MD Andy switching between his Scott CR1 SL with full Shimano Di2 kit and his Specialized Roubaix SL3 Expert with full Ultegra (it’s tricky owning a bike shop!) and he just can’t decide which he likes more.

We’ve got William who is new to this road biking on his Specialized Secteur Comp and his Mrs’ Beth on her Specialized Dolce Comp which both feature the same Zertz inserts as the Roubaix to make them very compliant machines on their commute from Staveley to Biketreks every day (Beth to Gaynor sports though).  We’ve got Mike who won’t sit still for 5 minutes on his Scott CR1 Team which has had colour coded bottle cages, water bottles, computers, tyres etc added to it since his purchase a few months ago, and he is currently road testing the Garmin Edge 800 GPS magical thing that tells us his cadence, calories burnt, his route travelled, his best time over a certain section and much much more (we’re using it to see how many cake stops he makes on a trip out!)

Weeeeeee Colin (he’s Scottish in case you haven’t met him) has just come back from a weeks holiday North of the border on his Scott CR1 Pro with the Mrs’ Kerry on her Scott Contessa CR1 Team and he cannot recommend the CR1 highly enough.  Both are fitted out with Look Keo pedals and Specialized footwear but protest it’s NOT a his and hers combo, and just between you and me Colin has got women’s shoes on!  Sarah has had a broken truck so has been “enjoying” her commute from tother side of Kendal on her Scott Speedster FB and is learning that hanging off the back down Bannerigg, wearing 5.10 Sam Hills and a hydration pack, and listening to Electronic Trance are shunned on the road circuit (they are clearly jealous of my style!).

Our resident roadie Kieren has been poorly this week (boy flu!) but he’s waiting with sheer excitement for his Specialized Tarmac SL3 to arrive so he can get back out on the racing circuit in his last year on the under 23 TT circuit.  Finally we even have our resident DH rider, mechanic Alex on some old skool road bike that he has single-speeded for his Windermere to Ambleside commute.  In fact the only one not riding to work is Keith who can be forgiven since an Ambleside to Pilling commute would stretch even the hardiest of roadies.  We all however look forward to him waving at us as he drives past in the “Team Car” (Clio!) ready to pick us up with a special Biketreks wave should we need tea, biscuits, Gore clothing, encouragement, oxygen….

So what is the point of all this I hear you ask?  Well many many years ago Mr Stephenson set up a little shop called Biketreks with the moto “staff who ride, gear that works” and sometimes this has been brought into question, but here it is, proof that we are riding and we are riding the products that we sell because they work, not just kind of work, or just get us by, really really work; I mean do you honestly think Stevo would let us get away with been late for work blaming shoddy kit and punctures?!  So if you are looking to purchase a road bike, regardless of whether you are male or female, regardless of whether it is for pleasure riding, commuting or racing we are the people to ask as we are out there road riding every day, not just talking the talk!

We look forward to seeing you all soon or alternatively give us a “beep” as you lazy car drivers go past… Sarah xx

Basics Maintenance Class

On Sunday the 13th of March we will be kicking off the 2011 Maintenance Class season with a beginners class in our service centre.  This is for absolute beginners to cycling – there is no topic too basic or mundane and there are no such things as silly questions.

We’ll go over how to look after your bike: cleaning,  lubricating, etc.  We will look at what adjustments you can make to the bike to fit you better, get you riding faster and further, and with more comfort than ever before.  We’ll also show you how to cure the bane of all cyclists lives: the puncture.

From removing wheels and replacing tubes through to putting the whole thing back together again.  Once you know how you will never look back.

To sign up please email or call the shop on the details given above.  Each class is limited to 6 people and will last between 1.5 and 2 hours, starting at 10am and costing £10 per person.  Keep your eyes on the website and Facebook for the rest of our calendar, due to be published shortly.

All Main Roads Clear!

All main roads in and around Ambleside are clear black tarmac…………………We have no new snow on the ground. It has recently rained. We rode off-road on Tuesday evening. Good conditions for riding, as the snow was still dry + fluffy, so gave plenty of grip. Here are a few pics from a ride a few days ago, before it rained!

Win Win Win – Photo Competition!

Within Biketreks store we are looking for cycling related inspirational images to use within our magnificent displalake guide bookys and  apparently the ones of us sat outside various pubs with our bikes leaning against the wall aren’t “inspirational” !!  We are therefore calling on you wonderful people to provide us with some.  We are looking for several Autumnal / Wintery images of Lake District cycling which we can have enlarged up to A1 size for display purposes.

For your trouble we are offering the best entries a brand new copy of the recently revised VG Guide Book to the Lake District!  Wooohhooo I hear you all say!

The rules of the competition are as follows:

  • Cycling related entries only (preferably with some aspect of Lake District riding in) please
  • Photos that are submitted must belong to the entrant and be allowed to be published for public view
  • Entries cannot be returned so pictures via email would be preferred
  • High quality images only that will blow up to HUGE sizes please
  • And we think that is all.

The competition will run from 1st November until closing on the 1st December 2010 and winners will be notified by the 5th December.  Please send your photos to marketing@biketreks.net, or bring them into store or post them to Biketreks, Rydal Rd, Ambleside, Cumbria, LA22 9AN.  Please include your full name, address, contact number and email address so we can contact you when you win!  Good luck and we look forward to seeing your talent…

What’s Fresh?

With this horrid weather with which we have been blessed it can be difficult to find the motivation to keep on riding and training.  So as ever we have our finger on the pulse (maybe) on the cyclists of today and have got in some turbo trainers and rollers to help maintain your fitness over the winter months.  Just plonk your bike on the the thing and pedal, its that simple.  You can do it in front of the TV if you like or catch up on your reading.  They are also great for more focused workouts and pre race warm-ups.

Turbos start just under £100 and at this level offer either magnetic or wind resistance with little or no adjustability and are normally a little noisy.  Around £150 things become easier as most now have a remote resistance adjuster which you can clip to your handle bars (very convenient).  Over £200 typically bags you a quieter trainer with some kind of readout.  Over £500 things become virtual.  You can ride up Ventoux in your shed or race against people over the internet.  with full control over resistance and all the data you could need these are the ultimate winter cycling toys.

So “what have you got?” you ask, well for those just curious we have a Elite Mag lite and for an extra £60 you get the Elite Sky Mag Speed Pack, an excessive name but a great value trainer.  You get remote resistance control and an bunch of Sky pro cycling goodies.  For those a little more serious we have the Elite Super Chrono trainers with a choice of liquid or magnetic resistance.  Both have Elastogel rollers which offer more grip for your tyre and better wear and are great for mountain bike tyres.  They both provide significantly reduced noise and increased resistance over standard magnetic trainers.  For the really serious or really bored we have the Elite Realaxxiom it gives you all the data you could need including real time power output, virtual reality riding so you can ride the Alps in your front room and race against you mates on the other side of the world.

Come instore and have a play if you like, just bring some biscuits!!
